Art and the Teenage Brain

This large scale relief print was the result of a collaboration between J.L.Ilsley High School, the Sun Life Financial Chair in Adolescent Mental Health and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.

The project was undertaken to create an awareness of the complexities of mental health, mental disorders and the adolescent brain, and inspired a large-scale art exhibit at the AGNS focusing on Art and the Brain for 2011. Under the skillful guidance of artist Melissa Marr, and in collaboration with the Arts Express Program, students had the opportunity to explore and express some of their own understandings of mental health through art.

For three summers the Chair has supported a Young Artist-in-Residence program. Find out more about this program.  Our talented young artist has been working to document different parts of the life of teens and youth with mental illness. From inside the walls of psychiatric institutions, to the trials and discoveries these youth have made, Stella Ducklow's work is powerful, moving and insightful.

She has been working with several youth groups in the community, and in the Children's hospital to help them share their stories. Click on the photos below to see a slide show of some of her work.  Some of her work was also featured in an Art Gallery of Nova Scotia  exhibit in 2011.
