Halifax, N.S. (July 18, 2017) – Approximately 70% of mental illnesses can be diagnosed before the age of 25, which makes adolescence a critical time for mental health promotion, prevention, early identification and effective treatment of mental disorders. Based on this knowledge, the team at TeenMentalHealth.Org, led by Dr. Stan Kutcher, developed a two-day conference furthering education in mental health called the Mental Health Academy.

“We are delighted to welcome over 280 attendees from across the region, Canada and the globe as we deliver on what I believe is a superb group of experts and evidence-based material,” says Dr. Stan Kutcher, Sun Life Financial Chair at the IWK Health Centre and Dalhousie University.

This year’s program will feature dynamic leaders in the field of adolescent mental health and will cover the latest information on adolescent brain development, school staff self-care, what to do after a tragic death, Anxiety, Depression, Substance Use, Eating Disorders and much more. The presenters will provide the knowledge, understanding and tools needed to better support youth dealing with mental health challenges.

The conference will also introduce Know Before You Go, a brand new resource developed in partnership with the Nova Scotia Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. This life skills resource helps students anticipate, identify and navigate situations they will encounter when entering the realm of postsecondary education. The full resource is available at http://knowbeforeyg.ednet.ns.ca.

Over the three days leading up to the Academy, Dr. Kutcher and Dr. Yifeng Wei (TeenMentalHealth.Org) will provide over 30 delegates from Nova Scotia, PEI, British Columbia, Northwest Territories, Yukon, United Kingdom, Portugal, Finland, and Romania a 3-day train the trainer program on the school mental health literacy components of Go To Educator and Mental Health and High School Curriculum Guide.

The fifth edition of the Mental Health Academy will take place July 20 and 21 at Halifax West High School in Halifax, Nova Scotia. For more information, visit http://www.mentalhealthacademy.ca/
