Teachers Resource Guide for Virtual Classroom

Download

TeenMentalHealth.org and TakingIt Global partnered to develop a set of mental health online resources available to teachers free of charge.

The combination of mental health education and technology in the classroom places teachers on the cutting edge by engaging students in a vital topic to help maintain their health through a medium that will engage their interest. This in turn helps students challenge assumptions around mental health and mental illness, combat stigma, manage stress, and be aware of warning signs that may indicate a mental health problem for themselves or their peers. It will also help students in their development of 21st century communication and computer literacy skills.

The thematic classroom is designed to act as a supplement to the Mental Health and High School Curriculum. This high school curriculum focuses on training teachers to be comfortable with their own knowledge of mental health, then empowers the teachers to share this knowledge with their students through a multiple module program. The program uses a variety of interactive sessions that help to promote dialogue among students, as well as with their teachers.

If teachers are looking to enhance these materials, provide homework assignments, or would like to do stand-alone activities regarding a specific area of interest, the Mental Health Thematic Classroom contains a set of four modules with a total of twenty comprehensive activities that can be tailored to suit the particular needs of each individual classroom, and connects to two fun and educational online games. It also includes additional resources in the files and bookmarks section of the classroom for both teachers and students to explore in order to extend the learning even further.

The technology involved in the classroom set-up is designed to be quick and straightforward for teachers. In order to further support the development of your customizable classroom, virtual office hours, frequently asked questions, and a demo classroom are provided, in addition to an informative teacher’s guide which can be downloaded here.

The Effectiveness and Safety of Suicide Postvention Programs

Download

In 2006, the provincial government and community partners released a strategy designed to help reduce suicide and attempted suicide in Nova Scotia. To support the carrying out of this framework, a series of research reports is being prepared to give suicide prevention partners the best available research and recommendations on suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention. These papers are being prepared in partnership by the Nova Scotia Department of Health Promotion and Protection, the Department of Health, the Canadian Mental Health Association (Nova Scotia Division), and the Sun Life Financial Chair in Adolescent Mental Health.

The following is a summary of a report prepared on the effectiveness and safety of suicide postvention programs. The systematic review of the research literature on suicide postvention
summary of the most substantive and high-quality evidence needed to develop policy, planning, and practice. Two evidence quality frameworks, the Centre for Evidence-based Medicine (CEBM) and the Office of Justice Programs (OJP) What Works Repository Framework, were used to evaluate the evidence.

Systematic Review of Suicide Postvention Programs

Download

To support the implementation of the Nova Scotia Strategic Framework to Address Suicide, the need for a series of evidence papers was identified. The Nova Scotia Department of Health Promotion and Protection, the Nova Scotia Department of Health, the Canadian Mental Health Association (Nova Scotia Division), and the Sun Life Financial Chair in Adolescent Mental Health Team have agreed to partner on the development of these evidence papers that will review literature in relation to practices that support suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of suicide postvention programs on bereavement, mental distress, and mental health, and to investigate their cost-effectiveness.

School-aged youth are a vulnerable population. They are in a period their lives that is crucial in their mental health development. Canadian youth spend more time in school than anywhere else outside the home. Schools are often challenged to deal with youth mental health, but are seriously under equipped and inadequately supported to handle this responsibility.

The curriculum guide provides a complete set of educational tools to increase understanding of mental health and mental disorders among both students and teachers.

The guide, developed in partnership with the Canadian Mental Health Association, focuses on training teachers (in their module) to be comfortable with their own knowledge of mental health and mental disorders.. The guide then empowers the teachers to share this knowledge with their students through a  curriculum delivered in a multiple module format.  The program uses a variety of interactive sessions that help to promote dialogue among students, as well as with their teachers. Discussing mental health and mental illness in a supportive, familiar environment enables youth to feel safe, ask questions, gain knowledge, combat stigma and develop their own opinions of the world around them.

The teachers training materials are provided for free, and many of the other materials are incorporated into our curriculum site, however, there is a small fee for the complete guide to be delivered to your door. These materials are produced by two not-for-profit organizations that are using these funds to continue to enhance and develop the curriculum.

The curriculum guide can be ordered and delivered to your door. Purchased copies also include a CD Computer Resource disk  that can aid in classroom instruction of the program.

Support After Youth Suicide

Have You Lost Someone To Suicide?

Suicide attempts remain the second largest category for injury-related hospitalizations. Some of these attempts unfortunately result in death. After the death of her son, Carol Cashen was inspired to combine her findings into a resource guide that could be readily accessible to parents that were faced with a similar loss.

The “Support After Youth Suicide” support booklet was developed to provide a much needed resource for families and friends who were seeking support following a youth suicide. It provides some basic, yet helpful, information about suicide, grief, depression, stigma and how to support a person who has lost a loved one. The information provided gives the reader some information about what to expect and how to cope in a healthy manner, but acknowledges that this process is different for everyone.

This version of the booklet has been customized with information that relates to some of the resources available in the Halifax Regional Municipality. If you want to make a version specific to your community, please contact us, as we are eager and open to producing numerous versions of this booklet, each reflective of community resources across Canada.

We'd like to continue to improve this booklet. Your feedback is greatly appreciated. Please provide it by filling out this anonymous form here.

Guide to Panic Disorder

Download Purchase

Feelings of nervousness and anxiety are common and expected parts of everyday living. For example, it is normal to feel anxious before you write a test at school or start a game of baseball. It is also common and expected to feel afraid or panicked if something bad or frightening is happening, especially if it is something dangerous (e.g. If someone threatens to hurt you or if you get lost).

Panic disorder happens when a person experiences panic attacks when there is no danger. People that have panic disorder have sudden, unexpected and uncontrollable panic attacks for no reason. This can be very frightening and distressing and often causes people to worry about going places or doing things in case they have a panic attack.

This Guide to Panic Disorder provides a general overview on panic disorder, discusses the causes of anxiety and panic, myths and facts, treatments, and provides some useful tips for those with panic disorder and how people close to them can help.

The TASR-A is also not a predictive tool since there is no tool that can be demonstrated to predict suicide. Rather, the TASR-A is a semi-structured instrument that the clinician can follow to ensure that the most common risk factors known to be associated with suicide in young people have been assessed.
